Quality of Care
From its independent position it is important for the Belgian Cancer Registry to be able to jointly work on research at population level. In doing so the Registry strives to make a contribution to better care for cancer patients. The focus is on developing and calculating quality indicators that can be considered as a benchmark for quality of care. Quality indicators are usually developed using guidelines for the treatment of certain types of cancer. The aim of these indicators is to be able to measure the extent to which the nationally or internationally devised guidelines are applied at the level of the Belgian population. For example, imagine that a therapy, consisting of surgery followed by radiotherapy, is recommended for a certain cancer in a certain stage, one can examine the number of cases in which the therapy concerned is actually carried out.
